Repping Memphis, Tennessee, Al Kapone, Sir Vince and Young AJ took the Austin Music Hall Stage - which was nearly empty - by storm Saturday night. As a photographer I couldn’t stand the constant motion of the three MCs. As an audience member, I appreciated the energy and effort put into the performance. Backed by a bassist, guitarist, drummer and DJ, Al Kapone performed a handful of newer tracks, along with some older crunk joints, and a couple of his underground bangers.

Al Kapone has had a problem getting the exposure he deserves his entire career. From a fallout with Def Jam early in the decade to being overshadowed by Three 6 Mafia on the Hustle & Flow soundtrack, Kapone hasn’t gotten much recognition outside of Memphis. Likewise Saturday night, the biggest disappointment was that there weren’t more people to see his strong performance.

By the way, Al Kapone is not a white folk singer/songwriter...wtf

Ditto. Al is definitely not a white winger songwriter. And the Mp3 attributed to him, is NOT Al. Check out http://www.alkaponemusic.com if you really want to know who Al Kapone is.

No need to worry - this post somehow got online before it was ready...this stuff is just filler. I’ve got some sweet photos and a review of his Austin Music Hall SXSW performance coming up shortly. So check back for the real deal.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?

great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words… smile I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.
