A surprising fervor and energy from The Drowning Men opened the evening, a welcomed arrival by the many fans who had clearly come to see a later act (based on the number of Alkaline Trio shirts) all pressed against the barrier. Not even ten seconds into the first song, everyone was moving and evidently enjoying themselves. And there’s no question as to why; The Drowning Men know how to win over a crowd, and their passionate musicianship engages.
Watching mewithoutYou perform is almost like a rebirth. There’s an incomparable, spiritual energy that they exude. It grabs you awkwardly by the chest and forces you to feel what they’re feeling. And as soon as it’s over, you’re left with an exhausted loss for words. But it’s so refreshing. What was once a mere audience suddenly found themselves committed, whether they wanted to be or not.
Aaron Weiss is an existential guru of the post/hard/indie genre, yet his musical evolution over the past few years has left some fans shaking their heads. Personally, my ears are very ready. And judging by the crowd that Thursday night, I’m not the only one.
Alkaline Trio‘s fans erupted when the group finally took the stage, excitement spreading throughout the venue. The support for the band was overwhelming, and they certainly didn’t disappoint those crammed into the too-warm, sold-out show. The release of Damnesia, Alkaline Trio’s month-old album, is likely a factor; it’s gotten rave reviews and re-recording older songs, a la Bon Jovi, was a step in the right direction for the trio. Thoughtful lyrics, expressive melodies, and impressive stage performance indicate that Alkaline Trio will continue to please fans, old and new.
