We are in an era of over-produced and -hyped music. From the songs we hear on the radio to the music videos we see on TV, it’s almost a constant bombardment of crap. Thankfully, on Tuesday night, one could find a reprieve from this at the Roseland Theater.

The opening group, Fitz and the Tantrums, brought some nice energy to the table, considering how opening acts can sometimes fall flat. Hailing from Los Angeles, Fitz and the Tantrums is a soul-based group complete with saxophone, keyboard, drums, tambourine, and bass. Each artist got a chance to show their chops, and none of them disappointed. Their blend of big band, soul, and modern jazz was a perfect opener and a good sign of things to come later on in the show.

Next up was Hepcat, a ska group also based in Los Angeles. The cheering started as soon as Alex Desert and Greg Lee, the lead vocalists, took the stage. They were followed by Deston Berry on the keys, Kincaid Smith on the trumpet, Efren Santana on the tenor sax, Lino Trujillo on the guitar, and Greg Narvas covering percussion. While most of the concertgoers were in attendance to experience Flogging Molly, no one seemed to mind the easy-going reggae and ska flowing from the speakers. By the time the fourth or fifth song came around, the crowd was swaying, arms were in the air, and everyone was ready for some Flogging Molly.

After a short interlude, the lights dimmed and the crowd began to press toward the front of the room. The lights turned blue, and a deafening roar from the crowd began to build as the headliners took the stage. After a few short words from lead vocalist Dave King, the magic that is a live Flogging Molly show took full effect. “We’re gonna play some old songs tonight!” announced King, as the crowd erupted in approval. Classics like “Drunken Matilda,” “Worst Day Since Yesterday,” and “Drunken Lullabies” were some of the choice cuts, and everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy each song more than the last. Between the blaring of the accordion, the wailing of the guitar, and the beautiful melodies from the violin, we all got a little vacation from mainstream music on Tuesday night.

Chopin and Òlafur Arnalds aren’t even really worth a comparison. Their music is nothing alike.

There was definitely a guy surfing in a wheelchair. I tried to capture it with my camera, but it was a total blur. He came over the barricade 3 times. The first time, he came over AFTER his wheelchair.
