I’ll admit I wasnt familiar with Holly Golightly or the Brokeoffs until Wenesday night and it didnt seem that the crowd was either, or at least they didn’t seem to be paying much attention early to the banter she began during soundcheck. So it was that after her spoken UK accent I was caught off guard by the rockabilly twang to Golightly’s voice when she launched into their quickpaced set, handled with the poise of clearly experienced musicians.

With Golightly keeping pace on her acoustic guitar Lawyer Dave deftly handled percussion in the form of several foot pedals attached to various drums and a mean slide guitar. Humourous and quick-paced, the rockabilly/country/rock duo mused on various themes from domestic violence ("hug ya kiss ya love ya squeeze ya till my arms come off...") to warnings for children about using caution around escalators (featuring some great imagery of the sign showing a child falling marred by an X.) Witty in their lyrics yet rather dry in delivery, Golightly and Lawyer Dave traded vocals fluidly occasionally harmonizing together such as on my personal favorite “I’m getting high for Jesus (because he’s getting low for me).” Quite the entertaining pair!

Hey Merseilles did a live web show at sonicbirds office gig on Friday that was pretty spectacular. Can anyone find a copy of that?

Kelli Shaefer’s songs get stuck in my head non-stop. Every other day I find myself waking up with one in there. And that’s a good thing, she’s a talent!

nice pics Chris. Don’t you love it when the artist brings some cool light. It’s a bunch of low hanging fruit after that.
