It was hard to tell if it was Lotus with The Egg or The Egg with Lotus; both bands were so impressive. The show began as slated, with The Egg leading off to a fair-sized crowd of enthusiasts who knew it would be worth arriving on time. And the Lotus fans who trickled in during The Egg’s set didn’t take two steps into the room before bounding into the fray of moving bodies. If not all came to dance, The Egg’s pulsating bass and weaving synth lines induced all in the room to move. Indeed, one of the band members said the best way he can think to describe their sound is “live dance.”

When Lotus took over, so did a more subdued swaying and bobbing as opposed to the gyrations, hopping, and sky-reaching that accompanied The Egg’s music. It’s difficult to put it better than avid Lotus fan David Italiano, “They’re so FUNKY!” Lotus drives its jams from the two back corners of the stage, the funky grooves set by four drumsticks. With most of the dressing provided by the bass guitar and synth, the lead guitar carries the melody. While a good jam and a catchy tune may have been enough to carry this crowd, Lotus pushed the dancing fever with brilliantly layered climaxes and finished by settling back into the simpler main themes. The large rectangular stage lights behind the band reflected the moods of the transitions as well, changing from pulsing mellow purples and reds to flashing colors of the entire spectrum.

These are both bands to watch—follow as they gain popularity, and go see them live.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?

great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words… smile I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.

WHO WROTE THIS...PUKE ! “WHO WROTE THIS...PUKE !  “Picture yourself coasting your bike past space funk palm trees, homeless harpists, vintage video arcades, electronic drum circles, and 60s psychedelic singers who’re waiting for the bus. Cosmogramma is kinda like that if someone suddenly tripped you just as you’re starting to enjoy the ride. But in a good way.””
