Pop quiz: What’s the population of Perth, Australia compared to Wasilla, Alaska? Did you say that Perth, with a surrounding area of 1.5 million, has more people than the entire state of Alaska (and that’s even counting the bears as people)? If so, good for you. You’ve come to the right place.
That’s as good of an introduction as you can get for Pendulum if, like me, you saw them in concert for the first time at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge on Wednesday. They’re big. They’re popular. And they’re good. Damn good. With over 7 million plays on Last.fm, it was a privilege—no, it was an honor—to be one of the first few able to see them in the 575-person Middle East Downstairs. It almost felt like stealing. If you missed Pedulum during their first stop on the US tour in Boston, you’re going to need to check out the Pendulum concert schedule to figure out where to see them next. Of course that’s only if you like to rock hard. There’s still plenty of crap shows to keep you busy if that’s what you dig.
Pendulum is originally from Australia, but the group moved to the UK and has made a name for itself in the drum and bass scene there. From the size of the crowd at the Middle East, it looks like they’ve developed quite a following across the pond as well and we wouldn’t be surprised if they sell out the Bowery Ballroom in New York when they play there in late October.
But you already bought the Pendulum album In Silico right? It sometimes becomes rote to say this since we are a concert review website, but Pendulum live is going to be a much different experience than Pendulum on CD. Rob Swire and co. inject an intensity that simply can’t travel through the digital bits of music. You want to go dancing? You want to hear good drums, bass and rock out? You don’t mind sweating? Then you’re going to have fun seeing Pendulum. Just watch out for the 18-year-olds. They’ll be marked with an X for you.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?
great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words…
I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.

WHO WROTE THIS...PUKE ! “WHO WROTE THIS...PUKE ! “Picture yourself coasting your bike past space funk palm trees, homeless harpists, vintage video arcades, electronic drum circles, and 60s psychedelic singers who’re waiting for the bus. Cosmogramma is kinda like that if someone suddenly tripped you just as you’re starting to enjoy the ride. But in a good way.””
