So here is the long-delayed review of the Sonic Youth show that took place at the Roseland on the 28th of July. First off, I apologize for giving such a late review. I’m sure most of you people have already moved on from this show and are looking forward to Music Fest or just soaking up all the good times you had at dmmr bmmr. Anyways, I should note that this was the first Sonic Youth show I’ve gone to, and I was really impressed with it. Let me just mention that the Roseland needs to do something with the ventilation and temperature control. Even with the bands isolated from the crowd, I doubt it made a difference in the heat. That place is way too fucking hot and the bands were drenched in sweat two songs in their set.

In any event . . . .

I always thought Sonic Youth was one of those bands where you believe that you missed their golden age and they are going to become one of those bands that will always be there in your town once a year, but you don’t want to pay more than 15 bucks to see them play a bunch of new stuff that won’t really be worth the money. Frankly, I was wrong. I mean, they basically played their whole new album for the show, but their encores were another story. Hearing “Pacific Coast Highway” and “Death Valley ‘69” was not on my radar for what to expect. Those are songs from the late 80s! Songs before “Daydream Nation” or “Goo” was even heard. That made me get goosebumps, and the crowd was equally impressed with them out on stage. Although I am a little disappointed I will never get to hear “Titanium Expose” live, this show was great. Kim and Thurston still put on a damn good show for being a married couple with a kid around 15. They really haven’t aged at all, Thurston still has the same stage presence as he did in the videos I’ve seen in the 90s and Kim is still the same bad-ass chick with a microphone. Lee Ranaldo still makes the guitar look like a toy and damn, was that ever impressive. Now I think I hate this band for still being good.

Great post! Really digging the new record a lot. The Rainwater LP has some gorgeous moments - definitely recommend checking it out. There are 3 of the new songs up on the myspace page: myspace.com/citizencope

love that melophobe has more “couples” reviewers, and more “Ian/Ion/Ian/Iain” than the average site…

Hey Merseilles did a live web show at sonicbirds office gig on Friday that was pretty spectacular. Can anyone find a copy of that?
