Broad daylight in the middle of a city park did not seem the ideal setting for a performance by The Death Set. Their blend of metal, punk and hip-hop, combined with their rowdy live antics seemed like a perfect match for a dark, crowded club, an abandoned Baltimore warehouse or a friend’s basement. But the sun-filled raised main stage at Mess With Texas 3? It turns out that it doesn’t matter where they play - The Death Set puts on a great show wherever they plug in their instruments. Lead vocalist Johnny Siera wasn’t able to crowd surf on the cieling, but he did scale the stage scaffolding during their fast and furious performance.
It also helps that they have passionate fans. Everyone around me shouted along to song after song, with the entire crowd surging back and forth throughout the set. Personally, I couldn’t distinguish many lyrics, other than the Salt-N-Peppa intro, and “motherfucking Death Set!” during the appropriately titled “MFDS.” The lyrics didn’t matter though, because the energy and enthusiasm of The Death Set’s show more than sold me.

I’ve read the book ‘Dream Boogie’ the life and time of Sam Cooke’ If the movie is as good as the book, Sam Cooke will get the respect that he has been deserving of for many years.
