I first heard of The Thermals when they filled the opening spot for Death Cab for Cutie at a college performance in 2003. I left our student union building impressed, but with my ears ringing from their opening set - not even Death Cab’s dreamy indie pop helped. Six years later, The Thermals have released three LPs, gone through a string of supporting members, and are on new label - Kill Rock Stars. They were an ideal closing act for the stellar lineup at the Kill Rock Stars day party.

Infitely more confident on stage, with flourishes of showmanship (Hutch Harris removed his shirt prior to “Returning to the Fold,” leaving him nearly nude, and giving him a strong resemblence to Kevin Barnes), The Thermals were a joy to watch. Harris and Kathy Foster had incredible chemistry, exchanging subtle smiles and looks throughout their set. Their sound was tight, with the volume never overwhelming the pop melodies that have crept into their recent songs. This time, I left their set completely won over.
