Now that I’ve finally finished hyperventilating from the excitement and fun that are a Those Darlins show, it becomes clear that I ought to finish up the Wednesday review before going to see the girls for a second time on Friday. The Darlins have gotten some very impressive press since arriving in Austin, with major critics of major publications (David Carr of the NY Times, e.g.) swooning and appropriately noting the Darlins’ laid-back, unassuming attitudes and gifted, giddy song-writing. They’ve joked about being Sx Virgins, intending to “slut it up” about town as they play show after show after show, oftentimes even breaking their previously hard-and-fast rule about not performing before 4:00pm. Or 7:00, for that matter. Such easy sexuality comes across as both raunchy and in-your-face (e.g. Nikki Darlin extending her commendable decolletage by zipping her top up and down to friends in the audience before the show) and also more subtly, expressed simply by the cool confidence of the preternaturally ripe girls that plagued you in high school.

The Club de Ville crowd consumed the Darlins recklessly and entirely, shouting and hooting and stamping feet. After blowing a fuse (apparently not for the first time on their recent tour), the girls chit-chatted and amiably joked with the audience and each other while members of Deer Tick supplied them with a functioning amp. Then they just started right back up again, not missing a beat. Simply put, the Darlins produce sheer joy. They’re funny and cutsie but still an entirely serious band, for-real about where they’re going in their skyward trajectory.

Seriously, they’re worth a trip to Murfreesboro, TN just to observe them in their natural habitat. Such a pilgrimage could only be glorious.

And if one more person compares them to the Vivian Girls, I’ll give someone else ten dollars to fight that person.
