OK Boston, what the shit? You can drag your asses out to see all kinds of crap shows, waste your lives away at Mary Anne’s or City Side, and you can’t take fifty minutes in Cambridge on a Wednesday night? Seriously?

We’ve talked about this before, Boston. You need to see Wakey!Wakey! in concert. Mike Grubbs has a rare talent for song writing, a passion for banging the shit out of his keys, and a reedy, emotive voice that gets us to all the concerts we can catch. And if you don’t come out and see him, we’re going to have to fight you. You’ve been warned.

And here’s yet another reason why you should come out: even when you don’t, Mike STILL puts on an incredible show. He takes the craft seriously, and puts on a tip-top performance even for an intimate gathering of friends and musicians. And he does it with great aplomb, without complaint, and a quick, infectious smile. He whips out wickedly complicated, jarring, flaring introductions on his keyboard, pauses, takes a deep breath, and then charges forward with his musical offering. For that, we salute Wakey!Wakey!, and look forward to the upcoming show HEADLINING THE BOWERY BALLROOM IN MANHATTAN WITH FULL BAND.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?

great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words… smile I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.
