Del Tha Funkee Homosapien - “Automatik Statik” - Bin It

text: Joshua Bean

Del tha Funkee Homosapien’s formula hasn’t changed much over the years: interesting lyrics sprawled across mediocre beats. On Automatik Statik, the beats are cheesier than usual and Del’s solid (but now repetitive) flow cannot compensate. More intriguing: why is Del cranking out subpar albums when Deltron Event 2 remains unfinished?

Reminds us of: A tired, unmotivated I Wish My Brother George Was Here, No Need for Alarm

Del: (Label / MySpace)

Previous (The Dimes - "The King Can Drink The Harbor Dry" - Borrow It) Next (The Lower 48 - "Everywhere to Go" - Buy It)

Automatik Statik to your liking? You'll sweat:

I still say Del has come the furthest of all the bands from the Judgment Night soundtrack.  Sonic Youth was already cool and, face it, Slayer has been a flat-line for decades.

    hes just wasting his creativity..
should ask his family to produce the beats next time!

Cheesier than usual? Listen closer. He’s putting all sorts of superfluous noise on those tracks, just for fun. ANd it sounds like he’s having fun.

    Sounds like: IWMBGWH, and NNFA?

    Those two are totally different.

You sound like you’re one of those Deltron fans who want Del to do Deltron only. Good luck with that.

Deltron was good. Not his best verses but still a strong release. I don’t want him to to Deltron only, I just want to hear him spit as hard as he used to.

Let’s face it, Del’s not gonna rap about computer viruses, the value of higher education or video games anymore.  Both Sides of the Brain and Deltron 3030 were great while they lasted but based on the lyrics recently, it seems like Del’s more interested in scoring points with his East Bay posse than making a timeless album.  Which is his choice, of course; it’s just that the latter is much more interesting to the rest of us.

Unfortunately in the hip-hop world, as soon as an MC starts rapping about things other than the streets, shorties, and wannabes, their audiences start turning heavily white - Del in the early 2000s is one example, MF Doom is another (just look at the crowd on the live video that comes with MM...Food?).  And whether we like it or not, this is considered a bad thing by most of the hip hop community, which reveals how entrenched in image and limiting the whole “culture” really can be.

“Mindkilla” is awesome. I’ve got this music video last week and really impressed through watching every performance particularly “Glass Jar”. Thanks dude. :)
