Dan Deacon on the injured list

text: Colin McLaughlin

Beloved dance floor hellraiser Dan Deacon has been hospitalized for acute sciatica. That’s back problems for the layman. And that’s cancelled shows for his fans, who will be missing out on 5 shows (for now). Shows will be rescheduled for January and “Crystal Cat” should be raging again by then. Best wishes go out to Dan, get better.

P.S. Bromst might be the best record of the year. Somebody want to challenge me on that? (Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective are not acceptable answers).

UPDATE: Here’s Dan talking about what happened in his own words.

About a week ago i started to feel a rather uncomfortable pain in the back of my left leg. at first it was only present when i was sitting but as time went on it started to get more and more painful when standing and eventually it hurt at all times, even when laying down. on wednesday evening the pain had come to a peak and it was impossible to bear and it was frightening, since i had no idea why this was happening. everyone i told about it said it sounded like bad Sciatica. anyway, it sucked major dick. i went to see a massage therapist and an acupuncturist. i tried booking an appointment with a chiropractor but none were available in Northampton, MA on short notice. the massage and acupuncture offered relief but within hours the pain came back and to a level i hadn’t reached yet. i bit the bullet and went to the ER, not knowing where else to go. they gave me some pain killers which helped to bring down the level of the throb. it was a bummer way to end a really awesome tour. everything was going really well and it was one of the most fun tours i had been on. i’m sure my back/leg will be back to normal soon after getting it properly checked out, working it out and getting some much needed rest. hopefully the 5 shows will be rescheduled ASAP. i’ve been touring pretty nonstop for a long time now and that’s going to change. before spiderman of the rings came out i was taking much better care of my body and i wasn’t touring as much. i need to focus more on my health, which will lead to a clearer mind and a more focused music. i’m excited about the future and the various paths that are being presented ahead of me. i’m not sure what the future will bring but hopefully i’ll see you there.

I believe the correct answers are A) Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca and B) The Antlers - Hospice.

Bitte Orca is the strongest challenge I’ve heard all year. Hospice, while good, isn’t best of breed when stacked against all the other albums that came out this year (in my opinion).

i’l second chris’ dirty projectors answer. and add a few of my own: the rural alberta advantage - hometowns; brother ali - us; mavado - mr. brooks...a better tomorrow; cave singers - welcome joy. still much to listen to…

Wow josh. gave me a few that I haven’t listened to. And US is a good record. How good is “Bad Mufucker Pt. II”?! Love that song. I’ll listen to the rest though.

I’d like to clarify that for this show they cut off the back half of Neumo’s floor with a curtain and had the upstairs bar closed. It made Neumo’s obviously seem much smaller than it is. Unfortunately, now having seen Neumo’s fully open at another show I can say that this show was very empty. Still White Denim and Brazos rocked.

I agree, it’s very good. Way to deflate their balloon.

Love the photos. And that “Walkabout” song is the drugs.

Wow… really sad there are no Chicago dates for this. Can’t wait to hear how the PHJB benefit compilation sounds. So many amazing musicians and for a really great cause as well.
