Essential Listening: Priors “What You Need (Hey Champ Remix)”

text: Colin McLaughlin

Hype Machine has a popular list and while I’m no stalker peeking out at people’s favorites everyday on any sort of schedule, I do check out the top ten from time to time. Usually it’s a mix of well known classics and half thought out house pop remixes of indie favs. And in all honestly, sometimes I am shocked by what people are digging, I’m looking at you Rage Against the Machine techno remixes, but other times, the crowd gets it oh so right.

This is a case of the latter and without further ado I present to you the danceably luscious, Air-like synths of Priors’ “What You Need (Hey Champ Remix).” A few seconds in and you can tell these guys are from France, but that is about all I know. What I am sure of is that this is one of those special songs that can bring out a sunny day feeling, even if the weather doesn’t share its sentiments. So give Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker a rest and re-imagine a brighter day right before we are knee deep in scarves, mittens, rain, sleet and snow. Cheers.

I agree that this remix is amazing, but Hey Champ is from Chicago, IL, not France.

My bad. Was talking about Priors but i guess since I haven’t heard the original, this might not sound anything like a French group if Hey Champ wasn’t doing it. I’ll go looking for the original and make an adjustment if necessary.

    Hey,

Not to bitch but but it’s good blogging to state a “via” of you got the track from another site.

And btw you didn’t even bother to change the album cover?! Plus you just stole the webart/remake of the albumart I did? LOL :D

Sorry about that. Sometimes when you are putting up a bunch of posts, a via can slip through the cracks. Check out my other posts. I’m fairly religious about it. It’s fixed now.

No worries, Foss. Not trying to steal anyone else’s thunder, just trying to show some people some good stuff. Keep checking back though, I think you might find we post a lot of other quality material as well.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?

great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words… smile I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.
