John Mayer Wonders Why Everybody Can’t Get Stoned

text: Colin McLaughlin

John Mayer has a new album coming out called Battle Studies. It has a single attached to it too called ”Who Says.” What’s different about this, because so far it probably sounds like every other album release cycle, is that the track has a blatant pro-pot stance. Depending on your age, you might be joining me in thinking, “who cares?” and you wouldn’t be wrong to think so. Most of us probably grew up listening to Lou Reed singing about heroin or the crack tales of gangsta rap. However, what I think is interesting about this, is that those artists were positioned as avant garde or edgy, while John Mayer isn’t. So, in a way, it might be pretty ballsy for him to go out there and try to push this as his single to radio.  Will they take it? Will they edit it? It is a John Mayer song, so will radio just run with it for one of their top dog artists? And I know radio doesn’t have the power or even the level of audience focus that it used to, but I’m sure this will still get a lot of ink depending on their reaction to it. Opinions aside from the “it’s just pot” variety?
