Kid Cudi’s new video for “Pursuit of Happiness”

text: Colin McLaughlin

If you were to apply literal meaning from lyrics to video, Kid Cudi’s happiness looks like a big party, where he gets his own personal champagne bottle, a DJ spinning his record and tons of dressed up people around him. Wait, I thought that was Kanye’s dream? Forge your own opinion by watching this (trivia fact: Josh Hartnett produced) video for “Pursuit of Happiness” and while we’re at it, can somebody please tell me why he chose this song, instead of “Cudi Zone” or “Alive” as second single. Is it so he could name check RATATAT in public? Don’t get it. I like that album, but this definitely isn’t one of its highlights. Rant over.

Kid Cudi to your liking? You'll sweat:

My rant would be the video and audio not matching on this video.  As for the song, I think it’s *the* strongest track on the album!  But to each his own…

    (josh hartnett??  wtf?)

Just listened to the album, and I agree with Roger - definitely my favorite track.

Wow, if this isn’t one of the highlights, then I need to hear the album. I love this.

The #1 reason why it’s my favorite is RATATAT. Most of the other tracks (especially the Kanye produced ones) have annoying in-your-face sung hooks (in other words, Kanye-style). The hook is catchy, and the tone perfectly fits the theme of the album: the good and the bad of the “solo dolo” life. It’s the most self-aware (without being self-aggrandizing) track, as well - arguably the hip-hop “Time to Pretend.” Eh, that’s pushing it a little. Also, it doesn’t make me blush, like “Make Her Say.”
