My Morning Jacket and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band are about to tackle the SE

text: Colin McLaughlin

Monsters of Folk was fun and all, but let’s be honest, we wanted My Morning Jacket to come back and come back swinging. Well, they must have telepathic neuro-receptors in their craniums because they are not only coming back, they coming back in a big way, by going out on tour with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Or in layman terms: a fleet of horn! There’s a catch though. They are only going to be touring the Southeast, so I guess it’s not all fun and games. But, who cares. They’ll go on some massive tour after that, and if you live in any of the cities they are coming to, you better go, or I will start to look at you differently. I might even snub you in public.

Tour Dates:
04/20 - Birmingham, AL @ Alabama Theater
04/21 - Nashville, TN @ Municipal Auditorium
04/23 - Atlanta, GA @ Chastain Park
04/24 - New Orleans, LA @ New Orleans Jazz Fest
04/27 - St. Augustine, FL @ St. Augustine Amphitheater
04/28 - Charleston, SC @ Family Circle
04/30 - Raleigh, NC @ Koka Booth
05/01 - Columbia, MD @ Merriweather Post Pavilion
05/02 - Columbus, OH @ LC Outdoor Pavilion

Wow… really sad there are no Chicago dates for this. Can’t wait to hear how the PHJB benefit compilation sounds. So many amazing musicians and for a really great cause as well.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?

great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words… smile I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.
