Over the course of the past few weeks I’ve spent a lot of time revisiting albums for my ‘best of the decade’ list. And since melophobe’s actual list won’t come out for a few weeks, I thought maybe my role in this season of giving could be to provide links to things like demos, bootlegs, radio broadcasts, etc for our readers that correlate to some of my favorite albums of the decade.
Today, we will start with the Engineer Demos for Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The album’s story has been told ad nauseam (if you don’t know about it click here) so I won’t go into it. However, one of the cool things that came out of those sessions are the fantastic alternate versions of the songs and some gem-like unreleased tracks like “Magazine Called Sunset.” Some people find it to be as rewarding as the real thing and even though it has been out forever, I wanted everyone that hasn’t heard it to have a chance.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?
great post by the way!

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words…
I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.
