Ask anybody around melophobe that has talked Kanye West with me and they’ll tell you, I go to the mat for that guy. I could go on and on about the musical and cultural impact of his albums, the sheer creativity that goes into his output, or even why maybe he’s not such a bad guy (just a little more real in public than other performers), but at the end of the day, I’m going to rep his most important gift, his music. Which I think for the most part is phenomenal and a beacon for the flailing hip hop industry. You don’t have to agree with me on every point, but can we at least come together and say that Late Registration is a triumph? I personally think it’s where Kanye became an artist and it’s the album that has done the most for hip hop in the modern era. Definitely a best of the decade choice for me.
And since rap is harder to post live audio from than say rock, pop, or r&b acts, I’m going to honor Late Registration by giving you the Sky High Mixtape of Kanye West remixes that came out in January. This thing is fantastic and I promise if you put it on at a party, it’ll turn the damn thing out. Another cool thing about this mixtape is that it allows you to hear his lyrics on top of new beats, which not only gives them a different feel, but also allows you to look at them from an entirely different angle. Sometimes it makes you respect them even more.

Ugh. Paste’s profile of Free Energy made me kind of hate them. So does your review. It’s this unctuous defense of good-time rock-and-roll ("we’re just here to party, and we’re awesome!") that seems more self-serving than fun-loving.

that inescapable feeling you are referring to, is that like when you hear something and you could have sworn you heard it before because of the nostalgic catchy quality? or is is like when you’ve heard a band exactly like said band?
great post by the way!

This comment stream is so meta. Great review Kelly.

no prob. The whole album is excellent, combining some of the harder sonics of Los Angeles with the meat of his debut and obviously difficult to summarize in only 50 words…
I’d say it’s on par with the debut, but better than Los Angeles.

nice call. this sounds fantastic. i’ve been listening to a fair bit of kanye recently, and it will be great to get a different feel from his songs.
remixes tend to bore me because I think most are extremely bland and/or unoriginal, but everything here felt fresh from my first listen to my last. let me know what you think about it.
