Download a Yo La Tengo show: live in Portland (soundboard/audience matrix)

text: Colin McLaughlin

On October 20th of this year, Yo La Tengo came to my fair city of Portland to play a show in support of their stellar ‘09 release Popular Songs. It was a fantastic set whose sounds ranged from dynamic to tender to ear splitting depending on the moment and I loved it. I ended up writing a review about it here and thought that would be the end of it. But I was wrong. Dum Dum Dum! So here’s the good news. I found a matrix copy (mix of soundboard, audience recording, etc) of the show and am making it available to you. Download it HERE. Hope you like it.

Thank you for distributing this (and thank you for taping, whoever that was!)!

I was on a trip to Oregon from Canada when I attended this show.  Unfortunately I had to leave before the encore and I’ve been dying to see what I missed.  Now I can relive the amazing moments and finally hear the encore!
    Cheers

Glad you got a chance to hear how it ended. I HATE it when I have to leave early. It drives me crazy.

Yeah, I didn’t want to miss the last MAX since I don’t know Portland that well.  At any rate, I left after seeing Story of Yo La Tango, so I couldn’t have been any happier.

In my excitement downloading this I didn’t even realize it was a matrix… unbelievably good quality!  Maybe it’s just me, but I should point out that I’m missing track 19.  I see it’s just an intro but it might be missing in the zip folder you posted.

Might be mislabeled by the taper. Is there a longer intro on Sugarcube? If so, that’s the intro.

And The Story of Yo La Tengo was pretty damn good wasn’t it?

song battle!!!

Two songs go in, one comes out. Pick a side.

Common - Faithful

Columbus Short Would be an excellent match for Sam Cooke (especially if this movie was to include Sam’s Soul Stirrer years). Just as long as in the movie Sam does the singing of course lol. But as far as physical resemblance my boy Columbus Short all the way. View this clip of Cadillac Records were he played lil walter… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmxTbcnW6bY

Oops meant Aloe Blacc not Black. Sorry about the typo. If you doubt that he should play Sam check him out here on you tube singing Loving you is Killing me. The likeness is uncanny - but the voice is quite different.

I have read the Peter Guralnick book and it is thoroughly researched down to the minutest detail. Amazing.
I would go for Aloe Black because he looks so much like Sam, but for heaven’s sake why are we talking about the quality of the actor’s singing? Sam’s singing has got to be dubbed in. We want the real thing not an impersonator. There is only one Sam Cooke. The actor can act, let Sam do the songs.

John Boutte should play Sam Cooke. Except the point someone made about him dying young, this is true. Boutte may be a bit too old.

Blacks say the word 50+ times a day. Fuck the double standard, stop trying to create controversy.
