Why is Sufjan Stevens’ “John Wayne Gacy, Jr” disturbing? A listen to the melody alone reveals it to be a beautiful song; tender and pure, but the words say something wicked this way comes, as they go diving into the grisly nature of a serial killer. It feels weird to love something so much that is about something so wrong, but that’s the genius of it, isn’t it? Here’s a live take that might actually transcend the album version and since Illinois is about to get shoved in your face on all the best of the decade lists, you might as well, take in a piece of what makes it so great.
